Martha Ryan, M.D. joined Vantage Eye Center in 2019. Dr. Ryan is a native Californian born and raised in the Bay Area. She graduated from Carnegie Mellon University receiving a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering.
She subsequently completed a year of service in the AmeriCorps program before attending medical school at Emory University. While enrolled she was awarded a Fogarty research fellowship through the National Institute of Health. She spent her fellowship year in Chennai, India working on projects focused on smartphone screening of diabetic retinopathy. Her work led to multiple publications in major ophthalmology journals and multiple research presentations at national and international meetings.
Dr. Ryan continued her training at one of the nation’s top ophthalmology residency programs, Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. During her time at Wills, she continued her work in global health, including surgical training in Bomet, Kenya.
Dr. Ryan is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. She regularly participates in society events and has presented research at meetings in the US and abroad. At Vantage, her focus is cataract and anterior segment surgery, including manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS) and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) techniques utilizing cutting-edge medical technology.
She has hospital privileges at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital and Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. Dr. Ryan enjoys yoga, hiking, camping, and exploring the California coast with her family.
