Macular Edema

Our retina specialists treat macular edema by reducing swelling, restoring vision, and protecting your eyesight.

What Is Macular Edema?

Macular edema occurs when fluid builds up in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. This swelling is typically caused by leaking blood vessels, which disrupt how light is processed by the eye.

As the swelling increases, vision can become distorted, blurred, or dim. Left untreated, macular edema can lead to permanent central vision loss.

Macular Edema Symptoms

Symptoms may develop slowly if only one eye is affected. Eye exams are essential for early detection. The most common symptoms of macular edema include:

  • Blurry or fuzzy central vision
  • Wavy or distorted vision (straight lines appear bent)
  • Colors appear faded or dull
  • Difficulty reading or recognizing faces
  • Vision differences between each eye

Diabetic Retinopathy

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Retinal Vein Occlusion

Uveitis (eye inflammation)

Treatment Options for Macular Edema

Anti-VEGF medications are one of the most effective treatments for macular edema. These injections help reduce abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage, often improving vision over time.

Steroid injections or implants can reduce inflammation and swelling in the retina, especially in cases linked to uveitis or post-surgical inflammation.

Laser therapy can seal leaking blood vessels and stabilize the retina, particularly in cases caused by diabetes or retinal vein occlusion.

In more advanced cases, a vitrectomy may be recommended. This procedure removes the vitreous gel and relieves traction or inflammation contributing to macular swelling.
